I was reading VH1's Rock Clock and was surprised to learn it's been over 4 years since the big to-do over Janet's Super Bowl performance. It really doesn't seem like it's been that long. According to them, back on this day in 2004, Janet was still trying to explain away the incident on a talk show. I remember being so annoyed by how the whole thing was playing out. Granted, what they did was dumb, but they hardly committed the worst crime ever. To this day, the incident is still having an effect on our media. Thankfully, it's toned down a little music-wise.. afterall, who needs another Maroon 5 video with little swirling flowers added to hide certain scenes? I think it showed a little bit of an ugly side to our culture, too. I still can't understand why Janet was crucified for this, but Justin got off with barely a scrape. He was just as responsible as she was and if he had any integrity, he would've stood up for her a little more.
In another more encouraging incdient, this is also the day ('93) a record store owner was let off the hook for selling 2 Live Crew's "As Nasty As They Wanna Be". This was huge news here, since they are from the area. I remember them going all over the media defending themselves and wondering what the big deal about their songs was in the first place. One good thing to come out of the whole mess? The so-bad-it's-good video "Banned in the U.S.A". If you haven't seen it, do a search-it's bound to be posted somewhere.
